STOP PRESS:
WEST YORKSHIRE’S COUNCIL LEADERS RESPOND TO JUST WEST YORKSHIRE’S CALL TO RESIST THE ROLLING OUT OF THE ‘GO HOME OR FACE ARREST’ IMMIGRATION BILLBOARD VANS TO OUR REGION
We are really pleased that the 6 Leaders of West Yorkshire and York councils have sent a joint letter to Theresa May. JUST West Yorkshire would like to commend the leadership shown by the West Yorkshire and York Council Leaders. It sends a clear signal to the government that the gains we have made in promoting good race relations among communities in West Yorkshire could be undermined by the government’s initiative targeting immigrants. It also supports the feedback from interviews we did around the region where most respondents agreed that we needed a sensible debate on immigration, but felt the government’s campaign was “counter-productive,” “un-British,”  “unduly harsh,” “detrimental to community cohesion” and designed to “appeal to UKIP voters.”The West Yorkshire leaders are right that to take a position and their call for a local approach to local issues is eminently sensible and is a positive way forward for West Yorkshire.
