Welcome to JUST Yorkshire

A leading project in England promoting justice, human rights and equality

Recent News

Keep up with our current events.

JUST has been around for more than a decade, operating at local, national and international level particularly on issues relating to counter-terrorism, the disproportionate use of police force and the adverse profiling of ethnic minorities by public institutions. We are an organisation that holds public bodies to account for racial injustice and human rights violations. To do our work well we have to be politically and financially independent, so that we can fulfil our role without fear, favour or censure – and we make no apologies for our approach.

Organisations like JUST provide a voice, a volume and a decibel that is not only heard – but fundamentally listened to by commissioning groups, public posies and politicians. We realise that to achieve our human rights, racial justice and civil liberty objectives, we can’t do it on our own, because we all have a role to play.

That means recognising that we need to continue to provide a credible voice – but to do that effectively those in power need to provide us with a platform to do so – so that we are engaged in a dialogue of equals.

There has to be a recognition that the BME community is not a homogenous group – so when services are commissioned they are commissioned for all people – and not just the majority. Public institutions, therefore need to adapt and develop cultural competence in the design of their needs assessments.

JUST supports equality for casino workers

With the online casino industry becoming more and more prominent in today’s times, thanks to revolutionary products such as fast payout casino sites and VR slot games, it is time to wonder if workers employed within the industry who belong to ethnic/racial minorities are receiving an equally fair treatment.

Just to have an idea, the UK gambling industry employs around 100.000 people, as per the UKGC. We are led to believe that, unfortunately, there might be ample space for discrimination here.

If the look at the US, precedents are not encouraging. John O’Donnel, former president of the Trump Plaza Casino – yes, the current US president is a former casino owner himself – made the world aware of racist patterns among management. Also, there have been several reports of black people being discriminated in casinos in the State of Nevada.
