Authentic Stories from Diners
We came for the tasting menu on Valentine’s Day - the pub decor is cozy and charming but was slightly let down by the service, at times quite slow but still pleasant and lovely servers (waiting 10+ minutes for our coats at the end too, had to go get them ourselves) - the food was nice, I wouldn’t say it was amazing or anything special per say and won’t be rushing back so just an average experience really! Probably really lovely place to go and just get a drink, dog friendly too which is always a plus!
This was a very fine meal, and I have not been for a while. You walk in to a very beautiful pub bar, with little signs everywhere telling you what time you can sit at tables at. It may be better if one of the excellent staff were to greet you and suggest a seat. We had a pint and read the menus for the (pre booked) lunch and were taken through to one of the dining rooms. Tables were quite close together I thought, and the Mouseman tops could do with a little attention. Very good potato bread came, along with the wine chosen for the starter, then the pasta with truffles (very good 36 month Parmesan slightly overdone) and my guest had black pudding with goose liver and an apple topping, which was practiced and good. The quality of the black pudding was superb. Mains of roast beef sirloin and mallard were both great, but not very good roast potatoes, unfortunately. Good bottle of burgundy. One stand out souflee and some cheese which was fine, but had I known there was a trolley, I’d had chosen differently. ‘Warm’ digestive biscuits were cold. Nice pudding wine, brandy and a very good espresso. Staff were excellent throughout, but the food needs a little attention.
We came ten days ago just after Christmas. We were very kindly put in the private area by the kitchen. All five of us had an absolutely brilliant meal, in fact I've never had a bad one here. The service is attentive but not over the top and a lovely touch being asked if we fancied a drink in the bar first. Food outstanding as always and such a lovely way to whirl away a few hours. We'll be back - hopefully very soon. Thank you.
We had a fantastic stay. The bar area in The Star was lively as there was a shooting party in but it made it interesting to see them all dolled up in their shooting attire. We had had the a la carte menu and each of the three courses were excellent and unique. Staff were great and knowledgeable explaining what each course contained. The accomodation was excellent with nice touches like the good selection of beverages. The only negative and it is minor was the shower in the room we were in as this was just a hand held. The lounge was comfy with roaring fires and the the breakfast area is really unique and a real surprise. Breakfast choice was great, the sausages were some of the best we gave had. We visited nearby Helmsley and Thirsk and spent a few enjoyable and fascinating hours at Rievaux Abbey( had to wait till next day due to snow) All in all a fantastic place and will revisit at some point probably in the summer
I cannot say enough about this absolutely lovely Inn in the middle of the Yorkshire countryside. We knew that the Star Inn boasted a Michelin Star restaurant, but we did not expect such charming accommodations. Our rooms were cosy, comfortable and well appointed. Even better, the common rooms were so inviting that we just wanted to sit on a sofa around the fireplace, chat and have a glass of wine or two. The breakfast in the morning is served around a massive round table in a room that used to accommodate cattle. The owners love of game hunting is evidenced in the decor throughout. A very short walk across the street is the thatched roof pub and dining rooms for the restaurant. This is another place you want to spend considerable time and we did.We opted for the 11 course tasting menu. That may sound like a lot (I was a bit full for the sweets) but it was so well balanced and delicious that every bite felt like a journey I wanted to take. They even made perfect accommodations for my husband who is allergic to shellfish. If the tasting menu is not your thing, I am positive that their Ala-carte menu is superb. In fact, their cheese selection was incredible on its own. I cannot recommend this Inn and restaurant enough for any traveler who loves the countryside and the pleasures of fine dining.
