Tours & Activities in York

This combined ticket offers two distinct experiences that capture different facets of York's appeal. First, the York Dungeon presents a theatrical journey into the city's darker past, using live actors, special effects, and detailed sets to bring to life infamous events and characters from York’s medieval through early modern periods. Audiences are taken through a series of interactive chambers where they encounter tales of plague, crime, and punishment, all within the atmospheric confines of a historic building near the city center. Following this, the 45-minute sightseeing cruise on the River Ouse provides a contrasting perspective, drifting past landmarks such as the medieval city walls, Clifford’s Tower, and the imposing York Minster from the water, with commentary that touches on both historical facts and local lore. Key highlights inside the York Dungeon include the Gallows scene re-enactment, where visitors see the grim justice system of Tudor York, and the plague doctor’s chamber, complete with authentic smells and chilling soundscapes that evoke the terror of the Black Death. The actors engage visitors directly, combining humor with horror to create an immersive theatrical experience. On the river cruise, the slow passage under historic bridges offers ample opportunity to see centuries-old architecture reflected in the water, while the guide points out former merchant houses, the remains of Roman walls, and the modern developments along the quayside, blending York’s layered timeline. The Dungeon tour is conducted in small groups led by professional actors who perform scripted but interactive shows lasting around 75 minutes. This is followed by the boat cruise, which accommodates groups of up to 50 passengers, with seating both indoors and on open decks. The boat’s slow pace and gentle motion make it accessible to most visitors, while commentary is delivered via a live guide or recorded system depending on the day. Both attractions are located within a short walk of each other in central York, allowing easy transitions between them without the need for additional transport. This combination suits those interested in experiencing York’s historic atmosphere from both a dramatic and a scenic viewpoint. It appeals to visitors who enjoy storytelling that is both educational and theatrical, as well as those who appreciate seeing the city’s architecture and riverside environment from a different vantage point. Families with older children, history buffs, and those seeking an alternative to conventional sightseeing tours will find this package engaging and varied.

Authentic Stories from Diners
This has been one of my favourite restaurants visiting York. The service was lovely, everyone was friendly and really helpful. The interior was lovely, I fell in love with the atmosphere. The food was delightful, nothing that we ordered was bad. It was all delicious.
As a previous New Orleans regular visitor I've been missing my NOLA fix. York provides a memorable alternative We went on successive nights to sample the food and live jazz (the latter only on Tues/Fri/Sun). A number of dishes on the menu are distinctively Creole & Cajun, which added to the overall authenticity... including Jambalaya, Gumbo, Cajun Monkfish, and Creole Brioche Bread Pudding... all were fabulous. A Sazerac cocktail (or two) also brought back many treasured memories. Who knows when I'll go back to New Orleans with the current political shenanigans... but I hope to return to NOLA in York soon.
An amazing restaurant with friendly attentive staff, and a wonderful atmosphere. The food was delicious, and perfectly portioned. 100% worth a visit.
We had a fabulous evening! The food and cocktails were so good and Amelia, our waitress, is an absolute credit to the restaurant, funny, attentive and kind. Amongst many great food options, the pecan pie was a stand out and the scallops were amazing. We will definitely be back!
I've visited York so many times, and must have frequently walked past this restaurant without noticing it, but on my latest visit I decided on the spur of the moment to have lunch here, and was really glad I did! The two girls who greeted me were lovely, so kind and welcoming! I felt as though I had been transported back to 1920's New Orleans when I entered the bar. Art Deco furnishings, marble top tables, chandeliers above the bar, the exuberant feathers and flowers, and 1920's jazz music in the background. The leather chairs were really comfortable. Had my lunch in the ground floor bar, but there's a larger restaurant and toilets downstairs. Chose a good Merlot from an extensive list of wines and champagne. The tapas style small plates (two plus a side for £19.95) was a great idea, especially as I'm unfamiliar with Creole and Cajun food, allowing me to try different dishes and flavours without getting over-full. There was a wide choice of meat, fish and vegetarian options. Opted for the jambalaya (a deliciously spicy dish of chicken, spiced sausage and prawns with tomato and rice); pulled pork arancinis served with a little pot of chipotle mayonnaise; and pan fried tenderstem broccoli in melted chilli butter, topped with toasted almonds. Nicely presented and wonderful flavours. My only criticism is that they could have been warmer. The Mississippi Mud Pie that I had for dessert was chocolate heaven, topped with whipped cream. Some tempting coffee liqueurs too, but I settled for a nice latte! Attentive and very friendly service from the two waitresses throughout the meal. The restaurant had a really cosy and relaxed vibe. Would definitely come here again!
