Tours & Activities in York

This combined ticket offers two distinct experiences that capture different facets of York's appeal. First, the York Dungeon presents a theatrical journey into the city's darker past, using live actors, special effects, and detailed sets to bring to life infamous events and characters from York’s medieval through early modern periods. Audiences are taken through a series of interactive chambers where they encounter tales of plague, crime, and punishment, all within the atmospheric confines of a historic building near the city center. Following this, the 45-minute sightseeing cruise on the River Ouse provides a contrasting perspective, drifting past landmarks such as the medieval city walls, Clifford’s Tower, and the imposing York Minster from the water, with commentary that touches on both historical facts and local lore. Key highlights inside the York Dungeon include the Gallows scene re-enactment, where visitors see the grim justice system of Tudor York, and the plague doctor’s chamber, complete with authentic smells and chilling soundscapes that evoke the terror of the Black Death. The actors engage visitors directly, combining humor with horror to create an immersive theatrical experience. On the river cruise, the slow passage under historic bridges offers ample opportunity to see centuries-old architecture reflected in the water, while the guide points out former merchant houses, the remains of Roman walls, and the modern developments along the quayside, blending York’s layered timeline. The Dungeon tour is conducted in small groups led by professional actors who perform scripted but interactive shows lasting around 75 minutes. This is followed by the boat cruise, which accommodates groups of up to 50 passengers, with seating both indoors and on open decks. The boat’s slow pace and gentle motion make it accessible to most visitors, while commentary is delivered via a live guide or recorded system depending on the day. Both attractions are located within a short walk of each other in central York, allowing easy transitions between them without the need for additional transport. This combination suits those interested in experiencing York’s historic atmosphere from both a dramatic and a scenic viewpoint. It appeals to visitors who enjoy storytelling that is both educational and theatrical, as well as those who appreciate seeing the city’s architecture and riverside environment from a different vantage point. Families with older children, history buffs, and those seeking an alternative to conventional sightseeing tours will find this package engaging and varied.

Authentic Stories from Diners
Lovely place, great food and great staff, I can’t fault this place and I personally think this is better than some Yorkshire restaurants with a Michelin star. We had a fantastic family meal.
Incredibly delicious food, attentive staff, wonderful evening. Thanks to all for making it such an enjoyable birthday meal.
My recent stay at The Alice Hawthorn was my third visit, and once again it felt just as personal and unique as the previous ones. Every stay here has its own special touch. The staff are consistently warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming — no matter who you meet, you immediately feel at home the moment you step through the door. The food is absolutely fantastic, with a menu that’s always well thought out, varied, and full of flavour. It’s clear that great care and passion go into every dish. The location itself is another highlight — nestled in beautiful Nun Monkton, it’s the perfect place to slow down, enjoy nature, and experience the peaceful charm of the Yorkshire countryside. I’m already looking forward to my next visit. The Alice Hawthorn is truly a charming and unique place that I’ll always return to.
We visited this remote hotel/ restaurant with friends who are regular diners here. The service was first class and very laid back and unpretentious. After viewing the menus, our choices were made and ordered. What followed was a superb meal. All three courses being perfectly cooked. We all had the firecracker shrimp as a starter and it was delicious. The restaurant was very busy and yet the service ran very effectively and smoothly. Quite simply, there was nothing to dislike. Well worth a visit. It is, however, not a cheap venue.
First went here the end of January and stayed over in the the Alice room. The pub is in a beautiful village. Back to the pub, the food was outstanding and great service. Lovely restaurant Great nights sleep and the breakfast was lovely. We enjoyed it that much we returned with friends 4 weeks later. The menu had changed and the food was still amazing. We stayed in a differemt room and both our room and our friends were as lovely as Alice was but i woild say if you can book Alice. The staff are welcoming and friendly. You will find it hard to find a place as great as this. Just a note if you are looking for pub food this isn't the place for you. Alice Hawthorn would give michelin star restaurants a run for their money.
