The Star Inn The City

Tours & Activities in York

This combined ticket offers two distinct experiences that capture different facets of York's appeal. First, the York Dungeon presents a theatrical journey into the city's darker past, using live actors, special effects, and detailed sets to bring to life infamous events and characters from York’s medieval through early modern periods. Audiences are taken through a series of interactive chambers where they encounter tales of plague, crime, and punishment, all within the atmospheric confines of a historic building near the city center. Following this, the 45-minute sightseeing cruise on the River Ouse provides a contrasting perspective, drifting past landmarks such as the medieval city walls, Clifford’s Tower, and the imposing York Minster from the water, with commentary that touches on both historical facts and local lore. Key highlights inside the York Dungeon include the Gallows scene re-enactment, where visitors see the grim justice system of Tudor York, and the plague doctor’s chamber, complete with authentic smells and chilling soundscapes that evoke the terror of the Black Death. The actors engage visitors directly, combining humor with horror to create an immersive theatrical experience. On the river cruise, the slow passage under historic bridges offers ample opportunity to see centuries-old architecture reflected in the water, while the guide points out former merchant houses, the remains of Roman walls, and the modern developments along the quayside, blending York’s layered timeline. The Dungeon tour is conducted in small groups led by professional actors who perform scripted but interactive shows lasting around 75 minutes. This is followed by the boat cruise, which accommodates groups of up to 50 passengers, with seating both indoors and on open decks. The boat’s slow pace and gentle motion make it accessible to most visitors, while commentary is delivered via a live guide or recorded system depending on the day. Both attractions are located within a short walk of each other in central York, allowing easy transitions between them without the need for additional transport. This combination suits those interested in experiencing York’s historic atmosphere from both a dramatic and a scenic viewpoint. It appeals to visitors who enjoy storytelling that is both educational and theatrical, as well as those who appreciate seeing the city’s architecture and riverside environment from a different vantage point. Families with older children, history buffs, and those seeking an alternative to conventional sightseeing tours will find this package engaging and varied.

Authentic Stories from Diners
Had the valentines special private dining meal with paired wines. The food was excellent and coherent service was fantastic. We will definitely return the next time we are in York.
Amazing food - great flavour combinations cooked really well. All of the staff were welcoming and fantastic, attentive without rushing you through your meal. We enjoyed a great wine with our meal and left feeling very full and having enjoyed a special night out. Thank you!
I want to be honest and clear...the food is good but it's almost cooked ready to be ordered. Takes 2-3 minutes to arrive at the table from when you ordered it. That might not be a good sign. I understand why it happens though. In the summer they even have 600 people a day and then it's understandable.
I had a very nice experience here. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly. I ordered the Yorkshire pudding and the slow cooked beef cheek. As a general comment I would like to see more vegetables in the dishes. The Yorkshire pudding is nice. I quite like the inconsistent starchy texture of the gravy, and it gives a lot of umami flavor as well. The horseradish is a nice touch that balances the flavors. The beef cheek with risotto is also good, but it was seasoned aggressively salty, which hid the flavors of the ingredients. The cooking of the beef is great, and the barley provides an interesting chewy texture. Note that WHO recommends a daily salt intake of 5 grams. As for these two dishes , I think they have more than 2.5 grams of salt in them. So this restaurant can be a nice destination for your trip, but maybe not a good place to eat regularly.
First time visiting as we had been gifted a voucher but we'll definitely be back soon, can't actually believe we've not been before as the food was first class! The boar bourguignon pie special was spectacular and we let the chef know that the dish was excellent! The staff are really attentive and tended to us on a regular basis. The whole building is quite unique inside and was decorated for Christmas, providing a warm and cosy atmosphere. We'll be back soon!
